How to Split Rent Fairly
Sharing an apartment doesn’t mean everyone pays the same amount. Our rent split calculator gives you the equal split instantly, but a fair split might also consider room size, private bathrooms, or income differences. Let’s explore both approaches.
1. The Simple Equal Split
Divide the total lease rent and any regular shared bills (electricity, internet, water) by the number of tenants. This works best when all rooms are roughly the same size and everyone has similar access to amenities.
2. Split by Room Size (Square Footage)
If one bedroom is significantly larger, use a proportion. First calculate the price per square foot (total rent ÷ total square footage of all private bedrooms), then multiply by each room’s area.
3. Amenity-Based Adjustment
Add a premium for private bathrooms, walk-in closets, or a better view. Many house shares start with an equal split and then adjust by $50–$150 per privilege, based on mutual agreement.
4. Income-Based Splitting
Some roommates prefer an income-proportional split, where higher earners pay a larger share. This is a personal choice and should be discussed openly to avoid resentment.
No matter which method you choose, clear communication is key. Use the calculator above as a starting point, then tweak the numbers until everyone feels the arrangement is fair.
