Mass Calculator
Calculate mass from density and volume – instant, accurate, with multiple unit support.
What is Mass?
Mass is a fundamental property of matter that measures the amount of substance in an object. It is usually measured in kilograms (kg), grams (g), or pounds (lb). Unlike weight, mass does not change with gravity — it remains the same whether you are on Earth, the Moon, or in space.
The Mass Formula
Mass = Density × Volume
This simple relationship allows you to find the mass of any object or substance if you know its density (mass per unit volume) and the volume it occupies. Just multiply the density by the volume, making sure the units are compatible.
How to Use This Calculator
- Enter the density value and select its unit (e.g., kg/m³, g/cm³).
- Enter the volume and choose its unit (e.g., m³, liters, gallons).
- Click Calculate Mass to see the result in kilograms, grams, metric tons, pounds, and ounces.
- Use the Reset button to clear the fields and start over.
The calculator automatically converts all units to SI (kilograms per cubic meter and cubic meters) behind the scenes, so you don't need to worry about conversions.
Common Density Values (Approximate)
| Substance | Density (kg/m³) | Density (g/cm³) |
|---|---|---|
| Water (4°C) | 1000 | 1.00 |
| Air (20°C, 1 atm) | 1.204 | 0.0012 |
| Aluminum | 2700 | 2.70 |
| Iron / Steel | 7850 | 7.85 |
| Gold | 19300 | 19.30 |
| Wood (oak) | 750 | 0.75 |
| Oil (vegetable) | 920 | 0.92 |
| Concrete | 2400 | 2.40 |
Example Calculation
Question: What is the mass of 2 liters of olive oil? (Density ≈ 0.92 g/cm³)
Solution:
- Density = 0.92 g/cm³ = 920 kg/m³
- Volume = 2 L = 0.002 m³
- Mass = 920 kg/m³ × 0.002 m³ = 1.84 kg
You can verify this directly in the tool by entering 0.92 g/cm³ and 2 L.
Why Mass Matters
From engineering and chemistry to everyday cooking and shipping, mass is one of the most important measurements. Understanding how to compute it from density and volume helps in material selection, fluid dynamics, and even in calculating nutritional content.
