Mulch Calculator
Why You Need a Mulch Calculator
Applying the right amount of mulch is crucial for weed suppression, moisture retention, and soil health. Too little leaves bare spots; too much can smother plant roots. Our mulch calculator eliminates guesswork, giving you exact cubic feet, cubic yards, and the number of standard bags required — whether you use wood chips, bark, or rubber mulch.
How to Calculate Mulch Manually
If you want to do the math yourself, the formula is simple:
- Area (sq ft) = Length × Width (if you have an irregular shape, break it into rectangles).
- Volume (cubic feet) = Area × Depth (inches) ÷ 12
- Cubic Yards = Cubic Feet ÷ 27
- Bags = Cubic Feet ÷ Bag Size (cu ft) — always round up!
For example, a 200 sq ft bed at 3 inches deep: (200 × 3) ÷ 12 = 50 cubic feet. That's about 1.85 cubic yards, or 25 bags of 2 cu ft mulch.
Mulch Coverage Chart (per cubic yard)
| Depth (inches) | Covers (sq ft) | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|
| 1″ | 324 sq ft | Light top dressing |
| 2″ | 162 sq ft | Weed prevention |
| 3″ | 108 sq ft | Standard landscape beds |
| 4″ | 81 sq ft | Playgrounds, heavy weed barrier |
Popular Types of Mulch
- Wood Chips / Bark: Affordable, natural look, breaks down over time enriching soil.
- Cedar Mulch: Insect-repellent properties, pleasant aroma, longer lasting.
- Pine Straw: Great for slopes and acid-loving plants.
- Rubber Mulch: Long-lasting, ideal for playgrounds, doesn't decompose.
- Colored Mulch (dyed): Decorative appeal, available in red, black, brown.
Frequently Asked Questions
How deep should mulch be?
2–4 inches is ideal. For flower beds, 3 inches works best. Avoid piling mulch against tree trunks (create a “donut” not a volcano).
How many bags of mulch equal 1 cubic yard?
Since 1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet, and most bags contain 2 cu ft, you’ll need about 13.5 bags (round up to 14) per cubic yard.
Can I use the calculator for irregular shapes?
Yes. Break the area into rectangles, calculate each, then sum the square footage. Enter the total in the “I know total area” option.
When should I mulch?
Spring and fall are ideal. Apply after soil warms in spring, or before first frost to insulate roots.
Does this work for gravel or stone?
Absolutely! The same volume calculation applies. Just note that stone is sold by weight (tons), but cubic footage is the starting point.
